LOGISTICS: Name tags, banners, pictures, bulletin board?

BANNERS, PICTURES, BULLETIN BOARDS: Norma, Nancy and Sally did a great job with name tags, banners, pictures, and bulletin boards at the last reunion. Any chance we can get you three to do that again?

COLORING WALL for kids: LeeAnn mentioned getting big paper, chalk, crayons, etc, for the kids to draw on like we did last time. Anyone want to take on that task?

SHIRTS, HATS, BUTTONS: I'm willing to help with something new: As soon as I can get them designed, there will be reunion hats, shirts (in a variety of styles), and buttons available that you can all order yourselves from Cafe Press. I'll get information emailed out and posted on the blog soon. I'll design the buttons to be name tags, too, so maybe we won't need other name tags.

Janie

ENTERTAINMENT: Sally's play?

Rumor has it that Sally has a play that might be fun for us to perform? Is that still a possibility, Sally? If so, are you (and whoever else you can recruit) willing to head up that activity?
---Doris thinks the play is related to Jewell and is wondering if it can be adapted to the reunion in some way?
---How would it fit into the schedule of activities?
---Could middle-school and high school kids be the actors?
---Will it require props or costumes?

LOGISTICS:Communications, photos, meal teams

COMMUNICATIONS: Doris and Karla talked about needing a communicator and runners between the house and barn. Karla said she would be willing to head that up with the aid of some nieces and nephews and cousins as runners. We could use cell phones or walkie talkies to communicate as well. Janie has a set of walkie talkies she could bring. Anyone else? Any discussion?

REUNION PHOTOS: Janie will take tons of photos as usual. Maybe Nari and I can plan for the family and big group portraits together. With all the other people carrying good digital cameras around now, I'm sure we'll have plenty of photos. It might be nice to put some into a PowerPoint and show them during the music in the barn Saturday night. Does anyone have a digital projector? Janie can bring her laptop and there will undoubtedly be a few other laptops floating around.

Kids photos are always fun. Maybe we can give a few of them shooting assignments. Janie is willing to coordinate this as well as getting information to everyone about ways to share our photos during/after the reunion. Anyone want to help with this?

COOKING AND CLEAN-UP AFTER MEALS: Doris has a list of teams from last reunion for cooking and clean-up. Should we use the same lists and let new people sign up to help where needed?

GAMES & ACTIVITIES: Hiking, volleyball, relay games, parade floats?

We've had a few suggestions about games and activities. More ideas are welcome, as well as commitments from people who are willing to organize any of these activities.

Anybody have any ideas for games you'd like to try out?

RELAY RACES: Doris suggested reviving a relay game that Barb and Amy introduced to us years ago: it think they made it up and it was hilarious. Anyone remember people running around with underwear on their heads? Barb said she is willing to put this together. Amy, are you willing will help her revive (or reinvent) this game? Any other ideas for relay or team games? The sillier the better, and those that allow people of all ages to play on each team seem to work best.

HISTORICAL HIKE? A hike along the Boone River has been suggested. Since there are many who do not know the history of Hook's Point, the dragoons, etc., maybe this could be a historical interpretive hike. What do you think? If you like the idea, who is knowledgeable enough to lead the hike? (MaryJo? Brian?)

VOLLEYBALL: I don't know if there was much organization to the volleyball last year, but somebody had to get the equipment and set up the net. Is anyone willing to be responsible for this?

SQUIRT GUNS: These seemed to be a big hit last year. It would be fun to have an assortment of them available again. Should this be a BYO thing? Does anybody have a bunch of extras they can bring along for those who are flying in or don't happen to own one?

PARADE FLOATS: If we decide to do the hay wagons in the Stratford parade, it would be fun to have some simple decorations this time. Anyone interested in planning that? It might be really fun to have a barrel of water and some big squirt guns on each float to shoot at each other and or at parade spectators--especially if it's hot.

Let us know by comments if you're interested in helping with any of these activities.

ENTERTAINMENT: line dancing, karaoke?

LINE DANCING: We have a suggestion for line dancing, which STEFANIE and ERIC have volunteered to lead (or did somebody else volunteer them?) I think it would be a lot of fun. This might be a good activity for Friday night after dinner. Will we be able to use the same sound system the musicians will be setting up to play music from CDs for line dancing? If not, what do we need and who can supply it?

KARAOKE: Has anybody found a Karaoke machine yet? We'd like to borrow or rent a system with song list and whatever else is needed. Anyone have any ideas? Ideally the source should be near Stratford, unless someone who will be DRIVING to the Reunion can get one and bring it along.

Please comment on the blog if you can help with either of these activities.

Itinerary Suggestion: Beer tasting

As direct descendants of a notable hops farmer, I was thinking that it would be relatively easy to plan a beer tasting of some Wisconsin micro-brew distributors, which I can supply. What gives me the authority to suggest such an event you might ask? Well, other than being a self-proclaimed "beer snob", I actually have a hops vine growing on the south side of my house, which I inherited from the home's former owner and friend, (author of 'The 50 Best Beers In The World'). I also think that great-great-great grandfather Jesse Cottington would likely give a nodding approval to such an event. So cast aside your Coors Lights, your Bud Lights, and your Miller Genuine Drafts just for one hour of one day and join me. Any thoughts? We can always make this an informal, or unofficial part of the reunion too, as it might be presumptuous to impose my "snobberies" on unwilling participants.

Label posts to facilitate planning

I'm still figuring this blog thing out as I go. I just discovered that if you're putting up a NEW post you can label it in the space at the bottom right corner of the post window. I'll do it on this one.

If everyone would do this, it'll make it easier for us to look at all the posts related to things like clean-up, food, entertainment, games, etc.

I'll look at the previous posts to see if I can add labels to them. I'm thinking if it can be done after the post was uploaded maybe the person who wrote the post is the only one who can do that.

Janie

P.S. I was able to add labels to everyone's previous posts. If you create an original post, try to remember to add labels. (Click on "Show all" in the lower right corner next to the label box and use the same labels I've already used when possible. If you need to create new ones as new topics come up, that's OK, too, but remember the purpose is to allow us to follow threads on different topics so we don't want TOO many labels.

Travel: Doris, Barb, Janie, Karla, Michael & Scott

We've started making travel plans for some of the Rohlings. Doris isn't sure exactly when she'll arrive and depart yet, but she plans to get to Stratford a little early and stay a little after the reunion to help MaryJo.

Janie will fly out of Boise the morning of July 9. She'll change planes in Phoenix and will be on the same flight as Barb, Karla, Michael & Scott from Phoenix to Des Moines. We arrive in Des Moines at 2 PM on Thursday, June 9 (so we'll be able to help with at least a little of the set-up before the reunion. We fly out of Des Moines on Monday, July 13 at 6:20 PM, so we can help with some of the clean-up, too.

Karaoke machine needed

From Doris:
I received an email from Sally saying she no longer has the karaoke machine which we were hoping we could use for the reunion. Does anybody else have one available--or know where we could get one (borrow or rent) in the Stratford area?

We have followers added to the blog but no comments posted as yet. Is there a problem?
(Mom wrote this before Keith added his posts).

Copy of Doris's May 6 email

Just for the sake of having this in the Blog record, I'm posting the message Doris emailed to many of you last week. I know she didn't have everyone's email addresses at the time she sent this out so maybe more people will be logging in as news of the blog spreads through the family. Janie

From Doris:

In case you have forgotten, the reunion is scheduled for July 10-12--only 9 weeks away! We've lost a very important member of the family since the date was first set last fall, but Marvin, I know would be the first to urge us to keep the date. Mary Jo as well encouraged us to go ahead with plans. I'm sure we'll all feel Marvin's presence when we gather at Hooks Point and we will honor him by attending.

Even though Mary Jo is ready and willing to put up with us for the weekend, it is a big undertaking. On March 31 she and Lee Ann made preliminary lists of what needs to be done to get the site ready, groceries needed in advance, meals to be catered, suggested activities, needed items to be donated, purchased, or rented (See earlier blog post). Janie, who rode back to Iowa with Mary Jo and Dolly in early April, suggested a reunion blog might be the way to not only get out the information but to get everybody's help. She researched setting up the blog and by clicking on the link above you can see the result.

All of this technology makes my head swim, but I know that of the approximately 90 names on our family list, we've got a lot of "authors" and "followers" out there who can figure it out and will be posting their blog. To show my faith I offer the first 10 bloggers, big or small, young or old, $10 each from my just-received Obama stimulus social security economic recovery payment. How's that for an incentive!?!

Barn Clean Up

Just an FYI for those of you who just HAPPEN to live in Iowa. I will be back from Minneapolis on the weekend of the June 12th - 15th to help with the barn clean-up. Is there anyone else available on that weekend?

Keith

Band equipment and a songlist

It looks like the sound equipment for the Engelby "concert" has been established (thanks mainly to Gail and Eric) , as well as some recording equipment so that we can document one of our dynamite performances for the ages. We haven't yet developed a full songlist though, so suggestions are welcome!!

Looking forward!!
Keith

Congratulations to LeeAnn, Amber, & Marty!

As far as I can tell, you are the first 3 to sign into the blog and LeeAnn's the first person (other than me) to upload a post! So, where are the rest of the Engelbys? Don't be scared...we won't sell the mailing list! Mom (Doris) and I are having a little trouble getting her up and running as an author, but we'll get there.

I've just sent an email to everyone whose emails Doris has inviting you all to be Authors of the blog. If you click on the link in that email and follow the instructions that come up, you too can put original posts on the blog---YOU can be a leader, rather than just a follower (followers can comment on posts but can't originate a post). PLEASE upload a photo to the blog so we know who you are---otherwise we'll end up with a whole bunch of the non-descript little icons on the page!

I hope we can get most everyone signed on as an Author or a Follower or both so we can get going with the serious reunion planning SOON.

LeeAnn's test blog

This is a 'blog test' by LeeAnn. If it takes, I volunteer to help spearhead the 'clean up' effort on the farm prior to the reunion (as long as I can take vacation days in advance). I am new to this blogging stuff, so will be hunting and pecking to see if anything works. Sorry in advance if I do something wrong. Until the next attempt.......LeeAnn

Lee Ann's reunion notes

Hi everyone,

Lee Ann shared the notes below to get the reunion planning started. It's a pretty thorough list. So, what's next?

We could use some volunteers to head up committees:
Advance prep at Hooks Point:
cleaning the barn, putting up lights, mowing, whatever Mary Jo needs help with
Food:
Lining up people to get the groceries, utensils, etc.,
Logistics: Getting stuff like grills, garbage cans, port-a-lets, tables, chairs, fans, first aid and cleaning supplies, etc.
Lodging: Helping find places for out-of-towners to stay
Entertainment:
Karaoke stuff, sound system, musicians
Games:
Lining up supplies and equipment needed

If you're willing to head up a committee let us know by adding a comment to this blog post. Volunteering to be in charge of a committee doesn't mean you have to do all the work--you're just responsible for twisting other people's arms to get them to help you. So, who wants to be first to sign up?

If you don't want to be in charge of a committee, but are willing to volunteer for some of the tasks in Lee Ann's list, let us know that, too. The reunion bloggers will figure out how to format the to-do list and volunteers in a way that we can upload to the blog and update as needed.

Official launch of the Engelby Reunion blog---FINALLY!

Hello Engelby family!

This is Janie inviting you to participate in the Engelby Family Reunion blog. I started messing with this while I was at Mom (Doris) & Barb's in Phoenix a few weeks ago, and shared the concept with Mary Jo's family when I was in Iowa Easter Sunday. I'm just FINALLY getting around to working on it again. Here's the scoop:

Doris will be sending you all an email (at least if she has your email address she will) to let you know about the blog.

---Congratulations! If you're reading this then you've already received the email and you've found the blog! Bookmark this site so you can stay up to date on the reunion plans.

Each of you can sign up to be a "Follower" of the blog by clicking on the "Follower" button in the upper right side of the page.

---You will have to have an account with one of the four services listed in the window that comes up (google, yahoo, or whatever the other two are).
---Don't worry, signing up for an account with one of these services is easy, if you don't already have one, and it DOESN'T mean that you have change your email or anything like that.
---I encourage you to post your picture and to include the name of the 1st generation sibling you're a connected to in () after your name. Since we add a few people to the family at every reunion, this'll help us all know who's who.

To start with, I'm setting up Doris, Mary Jo, Lee Ann, and myself as "Authors."

---If you want to be an Author, you'll have to let me know so I can add you.
---The only difference between a Follower and an Author, as I understand it, is that authors can add new posts to the blog, and followers can only comment on these posts.
---It doesn't matter to me which you want to be.
---We can have up to 100 authors, so we could make everyone an author if we want to.

I'm going to set up several pages for different aspects of the reunion planning
(Preparations at Hooks Point, Food, Lodging, Entertainment, games, Budget---and whatever else anyone thinks we need.)
---If someone would volunteer to be the Author and essentially take charge of discussions related to each of these pages that would be great. Let's spread the work around!

Questions or problems getting started on the blog?

---Contact Janie (email me at jmrohling@gmail.com if you can't contact me through the blog).
---I'm learning as I go, so if there are any experienced bloggers in the family who can help, please let us know!

More to come as soon as we get you all set up to participate!
The reunion's only 10 weeks away, and we've got some great ideas already. We need lots of help to make this another GREAT gathering of the clan!
